STA Feedbacks

I have had the fortunate experience to start as a student and grow into the role of a tutor in the USEL Lab. With hands-on experience immediately available in the Lab, it is obvious that students gain significant insight and intuition of the big picture of engineering. Unlike in traditional classrooms, students know that STAs are also students, and have experienced the same problem before. As STAs, every time we help students feels more than just teaching; we are actively passing on our experiences and thought processes when we faced similar problems in the past. This also allows STAs to learn from students as they may provide novel solutions or ask insightful questions that challenges the STAs as well.

STA group provide a good opportunity to let different discipline students to gather and learn about the knowledge outside our own major or even practice it when we are working on a project together. Through this kind of self-initiated peer learning method it broaden my horizon in other major and is more effective than learning theory in lecture.

It is a remarkable experience for me to learn and exchange engineering ideas and designs with senior STA from different majors. I have learnt many mechanical engineering concepts and coding from them and also learnt how to operate the laser cutter, 3D printers and wood cutting machines, and do machine maintenance. It is also a fun and enjoyable experience to help and teach struggling students to debug their problems, from each experience I may learn something new which can help me to avoid or solve these problems in my projects.

STAs work closely with their team members to provide guidance assisting the design process. Just like mentors, STAs share their own design experiences and offer practical suggestions, guiding students through the learning process.

When I help a student on a topic that they are struggling with, I can often relate back to the time when I struggled with the same thing. I can remember the key points or intuitions that I was missing that prevented me from understanding the topic at the time. I can then focus on explaining these key points or intuitions to help the student understand faster than they would have otherwise.

Being part of the STA community has been an extraordinary learning experience for me. By being an STA member, you’ll get to create an impact on students of different majors and disciplines through helping them broaden their horizons in the world of engineering. You’ll also have a chance to expand your own horizons through experimenting and trying new things beyond conventional classrooms.

With an increasing global market need for multidisciplinary engineering talents, the shift of our education to a more student-oriented “learning by creating and doing” approach has been instrumental in not only boosting students’ motivation to learn but also enabling them to acquire multidisciplinary knowledge, problem-solving ability and collaboration skills that the society needs. The innovative E2I unit addresses the need to equip our students with the ability to cope with technology changes and continue to innovate throughout their long career after graduation. Its successful deployment of various programs has demonstrated the teaching team’s dedication to engineering education innovation and further optimizing the great potential of experiential learning to train engineers for the societal needs.
